The National Association of Neonatal Nurses believes that research must be used to drive the practice of neonatal nursing. This means the organization shall provide avenues for members to become more active in reading, understanding, conducting, and practicing research and evidence-based neonatal care.
You are at the forefront of the research needed to continuously improve the state of neonatal care. Because of this, NANN has taken a great step forward with the following new and existing initiatives.
The Research Institute was formed to support you and the neonatal community at large by providing greater access to and assistance in developing and advancing your knowledge and skills, regardless of your level of education or experience and research training. The creation of a research agenda, programming and dissemination, mentoring, and grants campaign are all a part of the Research Institute. The Research Institute is governed by a Steering Council, made up of NANN volunteers who represent the interests of research in neonatal nursing.
NANN gratefully acknowledges the funding provided by the following companies and Charter Members of the Research Institute:
| Philips Mother and Child Care | Abbott Nutrition |
| Mead Johnson Nutrition | March of Dimes |
This support enables NANN to offer you the following current and future programs:
The Research Summit is a unique and fully funded opportunity for neonatal nurses with advanced practice degrees currently engaged in research or evidence-based practice projects the opportunity to present their research or projects in a relaxed setting among peers.
Abstracts from the 2012 Summit will be available in the August issue of Advances in Neonatal Care.
8th Annual NANN Research Summit
April 9-11, 2013
Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort
Scottsdale, AZ
The Research Summit is made possible through an educational grant from Mead Johnson Nutrition.
The Research Institute Steering Council has created a list, or agenda, of areas of research to guide NANN's efforts. This list will be shared with the Research Summit and Annual Educational Conference planning committees, offered to those applying for a small grant, and under constant review with regular updates. The agenda is found here.
The Small Grants Mentee/Mentor Program is now accepting applications from all NANN members with an interest in furthering their research interests and/or initiating their own research study. The program will connect those with little or no research background with experienced researchers to enhance their skills and promote the success of the research study.
How to Apply
Grant applications for 2012 are now available. The deadline to submit your grant application is June 1. Grant recipients will be acknowledged and receive their awards at the 2012 Annual Educational Conference. This year the Research Institute will award two $5,000 grants. Applications for 2012 will be for support of research studies. Both Research and Evidence Based Project applications will be accepted in 2013.
To apply for a small grant, please download and submit the following:

Applicants are encouraged to identify a locally based mentor to guide them in developing their proposal and in carrying out their research project if funded. However, NANN certainly can help match up mentees with mentors if that is needed. If you need NANN to match you with a mentor please complete the Request a Mentor form and submit to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
In addition to the mentoring components associated with the Research Summit and Small Grants Mentee/Mentor Program the Steering Council will develop an additional mentoring campaign that pairs fledging or non-researchers with those more experienced. In this way, NANN members will have access to people and resources they might not have had otherwise. Watch for more information on this in the months to come.
